Established as early as 1922 as a primary school, Kigezi high school has long been Kigezi’s top academic school but with one flaw- they excluded students with disabilities. Situated on Rugarama Hill in Kabale town, Kigezi High School has been a secondary institution offering both day and boarding facilities and after over 50 years of it’s existence, the school has finally opened its gates for disabled students.

Kigezi High School is now the second school in Kabale to offer an all-inclusive education approach after Hornyby High School decided t o also offer education to visually impaired students. Abraham Akampulira, the head teacher had this say – ” We started the implementation of an all-inclusive education approach to accommodate students with physical disabilities in 2017, and we have 10 students in different classes. We have had to remodel some of the school infrastructure to provide easy access to these physically disabled students ” , he added on saying “Some provisions were not in place since this category of students were never admitted before. Our plan is to atleast have about 20 of them because we have enough space and facilities to support their education

He had a lot to say about this including advising the Ministry Of Education to set a policy of having ramps in all schools for the physically disabled. There are various outstanding personalities who have attended Kigezi High School including Tumusime Mutebile (former & departed Governor Bank Of Uganda), Amama Mbabazi, Dr Ruhaka Rugunda, Professor August Nuwagba, Abed Bwanika, Kizza Besigye among others.

It’s a really good news from Kabale and Kigezi region as a whole and we at Kigezi TV salute all your efforts to offer quality education to disabled students. May God Bless you.
